Certain times reading the Bible can bring you up short. Take these words of St. Peter to the people of Jerusalem after the crucifixion: “Now I know, brothers and sisters, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did.” In other words, you can commit the most horrible of acts and not even realize what you have done. What am I doing that causes others harm not because of malice but because I just don’t know how my actions are experienced! Happily, the Risen Jesus provided the cure for such ignorance: He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Jesus has shown us how to act in a way that does not cause harm but builds up. It is the way of love. Once we see that every person we encounter is a child of God, made in God’s image and likeness, and has an eternal destiny we pass on to them the love of God which we have received for we are all members of the same family, God’s family.
