The prophet Ezekiel has a series of visions to help the Jewish exiles deal with the experience of being taken from homeland and temple. In one, the “angel” marks an “X” on the foreheads of the faithful — reminiscent of the experience of Passover in Egypt. The difference this time — it is not the nation that is saved but individuals who stay devoted to God. In another vision God becomes mobile! “Then the glory of the LORD left the threshold of the temple
and rested upon the cherubim, the wheels rising along with them.” The presence of God is not limited to the Holy of Holy in the Jerusalem Temple but has wheels so it can be found among the exiles wherever they end up.
