Just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ. The Feast of the Assumption says, if Christ the the firstfruits, Mary is the second fruits. Her Assumption illustrates that the entry of Jesus into glory was not limited to him as the Son of God but has been granted to all of his followers with Mary as our leader and guide. Have you ever noticed that in our creeds we do not profess belief in “immortality of the soul” but in “resurrection of the body.” Bodily resurrection tells us that our humanity, our story, like Mary’s has an eternal destiny.
