Jesus was well known — and criticized — for welcoming everyone, even “tax collectors and sinners” in the Biblical phrase. The only group he seemed to have a hard time with was the religious leadership at that time because “they preach but they do not practice.” The contemporary Church has felt the sting of scandal for similar reasons. While abuse is sadly all too prevalent in society when someone who publicly preaches the gospel abuses there is a particular horror. The response to this scandal on the part of religious authorities has not been appropriate to the harm inflicted. The way forward is that, after the Church demonstrate its repentance by making restitution, a more humble Church emerges utilizing the gifts of the whole body of Christ.
