“Every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” These words of Jesus are a model for us today. Some insist that the old ways are best and try to resurrect them as a cure all (e.g. the Latin Mass.) Others insist that to attract the next generation we must be innovative and creative. Jesus instructs us to make sure that we are rooted in the values and the traditions of the past while at the same time have the freedom to develop fresh traditions that speak to today. The divine potter uses the clay of the past in order to create something new.
