Peter finally figured it out. After spending several years with Jesus he recognized him as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” You can only imagine how that insight made him feel, that he was with the source of love and joy. Then his shock at what happened next. From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly. Peter objected and Jesus had to straighten out his thinking. In our own lives of faith we often get confused when we are going through some suffering or difficulty. We wonder where God is at those times. Jesus made sure that his disciples were well grounded in the big picture of God’s presence and action in history. Then the suffering on the horizon could be put in the context of God’s promise that all will be well. Our own suffering will only make sense when we stay grounded in the blessed assurance that the Son of the living God is with us through it all.
