The bizarre (from our perspective) imagery in the Book of Daniel serves as a commentary on political and historical currents swirling during that time period. (Maybe the closest analogy would be Animal Farm by Aldous Huxley which operated in a similar fashion in the 20th century.) The point of the Biblical story is to find the presence of God in these events. Jesus while obviously aware the political realities of first century Palestine looked for the presence of God in common, everyday experience. Our prayer invites us to seek the presence of God — maybe in the titanic national conditions or in the rabbits struggling to survive right here in the neighborhood. Wherever we look, we can be sure that God is there for the finding.
