In Ordinary Time the Bible selections for each day are done as an continuous reading — we start with a book of the Bible and read it chapter by chapter. During Advent the readings are particularly chosen for each day. On this, the first Monday of Advent, it is no surprise that Isaiah provides the first reading. Isaiah is the patron saint of Advent wtih is vision of God making something new. The gospel for today tells the story of the faith of the Centurion. “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.” What does that text have to do with Advent? The key is the very end of the passage when Jesus marvels at the faith of this foreigner. “Many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.” This reading sets the tone for the season by reminding us of the universal nature of God’s saving love. To enter into the spirit of Advent, to prepare for tphe coming of Jesus at Christmas, we must open our arms in welcome so that everyone knows that they have a place in the kingdom of God.
