Modern educational theory has discovered that having a poor self-image or low self-esteem leads to poor choices and diminished prospects. No wonder, therefore that efforts to bolster self-image and esteem can lead to strange conclusions; for example, that all the children in Lake Woebegon are “above average.” You have to wonder what modern educators would think of Isaiah’s word to the people. “Fear not, O worm Jacob, O maggot Israel; I will help you, says the LORD.” Who would want to be called a worm or a maggot? The prophet’s point is that relying on their own devices has lead to national destruction. Relying on the grace and power of God leads to prosperity and glory even if one feels as lowly as a worm.
