The example of Jesus demonstrates that no matter you do, you are going to be criticized. John the Baptist was criticized for being too rigorous, Jesus for being too lax. Of course, that human tendency to find fault continues up to today. Some Catholics were critical of Pope Benedict for being too aloof and theological. Other Catholics are critical of Pope Francis for being too pastoral and involved. Jesus teaches that “wisdom is vindicated by her works,” in other words you don’t know which critique is right until you see the effects over time. All of which says we should be cautious in our criticisms. When Jesus says, “stop judging” (Matthew 7:1) he teaches us that our perspective is always limited so leave judgment to God.
