Jesus left us certain commandments — “turn the other cheek,” “love your enemies,” “give to everyone who asks of you” — that we have to respond to. Sometimes we respond like Zachariah with doubt and skepticism about the possibility. Sometimes (hopefully, often) we respond like Mary and ask for more information to help us understand and heed the divine will. All too often we respond like King Ahab who simply ignored what God was asking of him. A few years ago there was a slogan to help us decide how to respond in various situations (what is my responsibility toward immigrants? how do I handle panhandlers in the Loop?): WWJD, what would Jesus do? A better question: what does Jesus want me to do given my circumstances?
