“Teacher, do you not care?” These words the apostles addressed to Jesus have probably been on our lips a time or two. Do you not care about the wars, global warming, refugee crisis around the world? Do you not care that our nation and Church seem hopelessly divided? Do you not care about my family crisis, my health problems, my financial difficulties? Jesus analyzes where those kind of questions come from: “Why are you terrified?” What causes these panicked questions is fear. And Jesus proposes the cure for fear: “Do you not yet have faith?” The cure for fear is faith. What often leads to our fear is that we can only imagine one outcome that will ensure happiness. What Jesus teaches, what the Church knows, is that God is at work in ways beyond our ken and that we need to trust that the Lord who has brought us this far by faith is not about to leave us now.
