It is chilling to imagine, as the story of Noah reports, that God “regretted that he had made man on the earth.” The decision to “wipe out from the earth the men whom I have created, and not only the men, but also the beasts and the birds of the air” reminds me of my “regrets” with the computer. When I don’t know what to do I turn if off and start again. God decided to “re-boot” creation with a great flood. But as the story unfolds, God realizes that plan is flawed. Instead of trying to eliminate the limitations and finitude of the human heart the plan of God changes to embrace the fullness of humanity — flaws and all — in the incarnation of Jesus.
