We read in St. John’s Gospel: “Jesus did many other signs in the presence of [his] disciples that are not written in this book but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31). When an evangelist tells us story it is not just to satisfy our curiosity about what Jesus said and did but to help us come to faith. For example, St. Mark’s gospel tells of a blind man gradually recovering his sight right before the confession of St. Peter that Jesus is “the Christ.” That miracle story is an invitation to us to come to see Jesus as he truly is.
