There are ecstatic moments in our lives — the happiness of a wedding, the birth of a child, graduation from college. We want the glow of feelings at those moments to last. We are like St. Peter who on the mountain of Transfiguration said: “Rabbi, it is good that we are here!” But those mountain top moments don’t last. Marriage also includes washing the dishes and taking out the trash. The beautiful baby needs her diaper changed. And after school there is the tedious search for a job. Jesus reminded Peter and his companions that the mountain top is not the whole story, that “suffering greatly” is part of the human experience as well. Whether we are on the mountaintop today or suffering greatly we can be assured that God is with us in all things and through all things.
