“Do you see anything?” In St. Mark’s Gospel the image of the blind recovering their sight serves as a metaphor for overcoming spiritual blindness and receiving the faith. Jesus curing the blind man at Bethsaida is set right before the scene at Caesarea Philippi where Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah. The way Mark tells the story the blind man only recovered his sight gradually, in stages. That perhaps is a lesson for us as well. Having God in our life is not an all-at-once event but something we come to in time as we live our lives. Maybe that is also the lesson of Noah sending out the birds to find out if the flood was over. It took several trips, it took time for the message to become clear. As we strive to find the will of God for ourselves we should expect a similar experinence of coming to understand what God is asking of us as part of the process of recognition.
