“I do believe, help my unbelief!” We have all probably prayed like the father of the epileptic boy at one time or another. We do believe that God is all good and desires our welfare. However, when we are going through a health crisis or a family emergency or experiencing financial worries we can wonder where to find God in the midst of our belief. The writer Annie Dillard once observed that she feels very skeptical when the priest intones in the Eucharistic Prayer, “All your actions show your wisdom and love.” Really? But the father in the story has it exactly right when he asks Jesus to help his unbelief. We don’t get more belief through our efforts but as a divine gift.
