The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place beneath the wings of the cherubim in the sanctuary, the holy of holies of the temple. Solomon sought to continue the policy of his father, King David, to center all power — religious and political — in Jerusalem. He built the temple in Jerusalem so that all of the tribes would focus their religious ardor there and not on the various shrines scattered throughout the tribal lands. While the policy seems sound it didn’t succeed long term. The northern tribes broke away after Solomon’s death to form their own country and the king there established a center of worship on Mount Gerazim — which perdured even after the destruction of the northern kingdom as we know from the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. Holy places tend to stay holy. Do you have a holy place where you find you can focus more completely on God?
