In most creation stories of ancient people nature is described as eternal and necessary. Things are simply the way they are. The Biblical creation story is different because creation is not necessary but the result of a choice. God chose to create and to do so in specific ways. When God created humanity in the divine image we too are given the power of choice. God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. We can’t simply throw up our hands and say “that’s just the way it is.” We can choose to work to make things different. Since in the story of creation humanity is given “dominion” over creation we therefore have a responsibility to make the choices necessary to prevent the global catastrophe threatened by climate change. We can make the changes necessary to preserve God’s beautiful creation if we choose to do so.
