Jesus was on vacation in what is now Lebanon. He seemed surprised that his rest time was crashed by a foreigner. He was clear about his mission and it didn’t include Greeks, “a Syrophoenician woman.” It was the woman’s obvious love for her daughter that caused him to expand his circle of care. We are tempted in a similar way to narrow our circle of care to those who are near and dear to us. But in order to care for our home we must care for the neighborhood, and to care for the neighborhood we must care for the city, and to care for the city we must care for the country, and to care for the country we must care for the world.
