Astronomers were excited to discover, what they called, Earth 2.0. It possessed earth-like qualities that suggested humanity might survive there. The problem — it is 1800 light years from earth and the fastest earth-made vessel travels at about two-one thousanth of the speed of light. We’re not getting there any time soon. All of which says that we need to do a better job of protecting the earth we have now as the Bible teaches. God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it. Over the two million or so years that our species have evolved we are perfectly suited for this earth. Pope Francis has taught us that we have a religious obligation to “cultivate and care” for “our common home.” To imagine we can ruin it and move on to another world would be a sin. There is moral imperative to care for Mother Earth that has to override any political considerations.
