According to St. Mark, after Jesus had the encounter with the Syro-phoenician woman he made the one hundred mile journey to the Decapolis. The Decapolis was an confederation of Greek cities on the far side of the Sea of Galilee. Did Jesus take the experience in Tyre as an opening to expand his ministry outside of the Jewish world and into a larger one? Getting out of one’s comfort zone is never easy. Currently the Missionary Servants are trying to figure the best way of opening a new mission in Haiti. This will stretch us in many ways — a different language, culture and history. But as the example of Jesus shows when God opens a door it is best to follow where it leads.
