In a movie about Gale Sayers (the prototypical male weepie) the great Chicago Bear said: “God is first. My family and friends are second. I am third.” That is not the typical value system in our culture. We are told to “look out for #1.” The contemporary psychological emphasis on self-actualization makes the individual the priority. “To love yourself is the greatest love of all” goes a popular ballad. However, the Bible thinks more like Gale Sayers. John the Baptist says about Jesus: “He must increase; I must decrease.” The more we get the focus off of ourselves and onto the God who loves us and the people God has given us to love and be loved by, the richer and happier our lives will be.
