There is a scene in the Man of La Mancha where Aldonza confronts Sancho Panza about his relationship with Don Quixote. “What do you get out of it,” she wants to know. He can only sputter in answer, “I like him. I really like him.” When King Saul told his son Jonathan to cease his relationship with David, Jonathan answered, “But I like him. I really like him.” And no doubt when the people “from Jerusalem, Idumea, Jordan, Tyre and Sidon” asked Peter, Andrew, James and John what they got out of their relationship with Jesus — healing? deliverance? cleansing? — they probably answered, “I like him. I really like him.” What we get out of being people of faith is liking and being liked by Jesus.
