Saul, son of Kish, was seeking asses. Levi, son of Alphaeus, (the same person as Matthew in the other gospels?), was seeking wealth. Samuel called Saul to become king of Israel. Jesus called Levi to become one of his followers. Saul and Levi left their old lives behind in response to the call from God. Saul, however, was not able to sustain his commitment to God and it ended badly. Levi (presumably Matthew) learned what meant to be a follower of Jesus and witnessed the resurrection. What about us? While we might not be called to anything dramatic like becoming king we are called to a faithful following of Jesus. What of our old way of thinking prevents our fully embracing the law of love?
