Jesus appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles, that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach. St. Mark reminds us that being a follower of Jesus has a dual aspect. On the one had it is about “being with Jesus,” being a disciple, living as He has taught us to live. On the other hand it involves being “sent forth to preach.” Our faith is not a precious possession meant to be clutched to our breast. No, it is meant to be shared… which makes sense when you look at it in terms of love. When you love someone you share with them — a meal, a gift, your time, your ideas. The world is starving for what we have in faith — the unconditional love of God. We must give it away for only then will we end up keeping what we have.
