When Saul, the Pharisee, encountered the Risen Jesus on the road to Damascus he asked, “Who are you?” Jesus did not answer, “I am the Messiah” or “I am the Son of God” or “I am the Word made Flesh.” He answered, I’m the guy sitting next to you on the bus. Of all the mysteries of the faith — the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Real Presence — perhaps the hardest of all to believe is that God lives within each person. It is hard to believe because we know what people are like, what a mess we are as a species. But for Saul to become the converted Paul he must be able to recognize that everyone carries the spark of God’s presence in their heart.
