Families can be the source of our greatest joys. St. Paul wrote to Timothy: “I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice.” It was from his family that Timothy got the values, the virtues that guided his life. On the other hand, families can be the source of our greatest pain. In the Gospel of Mark we read that Jesus’ relatives said, “He is out of his mind.” Because he thought and acted differently from their expectations, they looked upon Jesus as a problem child. Let us then give thanks to God for our families. At the same time, let us understand that at times it will be necessary to stand out from what others expect.
