The scripture readings for this day remind us that family relations can be complicated. On the one hand, it is in family that we receive the faith, the values, the morality that shapes our life. St. Paul says to Timothy: I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice. On the other hand, family can keep us stuck into old ways of thinking and behaving that inhibit our ability to grow in the Spirit. Jesus reminds us that a life in God has to transcend mere biology. Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. So let us give thanks for our families but always seek to grow in charity and compassion.
