In his first epistle St. John writes that “the Spirit, the water, and the Blood” all testify “that Jesus is the Son of God.” These words echo the experience of Jesus at his Baptism. The Spirit, of course, descended on Jesus at his Baptism and named him as the beloved Son of God. The water refers to Jesus full entry into the human experience. By undergoing baptism he plunged into the messy reality of life. Particularly, Jesus was willing to under death, to shed his blood, in the fulfillment of the will of his Heavenly Father. As Jesus, so us: The Spirit also claims us as children of God by adoption. Through our baptism God enters our life so that we can follow God’s will.
