Several years ago I was working with a consulting firm about raising funds for the missions. They wanted to know how many people would be served, how many places would be involved, how much was it going to cost to run the operation. I thought — those are not the right questions. It is not about “how much” or “how many” but “who.” When Jesus gave his mission statement in Nazareth as he began his work he talked about who he was going to help — the poor, the blind, the captives, the oppressed. He was not focused on the size of his movement but on the suffering that had to be addressed. Any authentic Church renewal must have the same emphasis of loving those in need.
