Taking a selfie is the perfect metaphor for our culture. The modern person places themselves in the center of the picture. The metaphor in the Bible is different. God is at the center of the picture. Even our spiritual lives can be influenced by the spirit of this age as we strive to “improve” our relationship with God. St. John could not be more explicit: “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that God loved us.” Instead of focusing on ourselves and what we are “getting out” of our devotion we need to focus on God and what God is doing. The point of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes was God’s merciful love, not what the people got.
