The scene of Jacob wrestling with “some man” — who he comes to recognize as an angel of God — is one of those puzzling stories in the Bible, but one that we can relate to. Haven’t we all felt like we have been wrestling with God at certain points in our life? Some difficulty we are going through, some aspect of God’s will we are challenged by, some personal fault that continues to plague us — when we go through these kinds of things it feels like we’re wrestling with God. The example of Jacob shows us what we are to do at such times — to stay in the struggle. We should say with newly renamed Israel, “I will not let you go until you bless me.”
