Let justice surge like water, and goodness like an unfailing stream. This quote from the prophet Amos is etched into granite at the Civil Rights Memorial located in Montgomery, Alabama, designed by Maya Lin. This memorial features a curved black granite water wall with the quote deeply engraved. The water flows over the names of 41 individuals who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement, symbolizing an unending flow of justice. The prophet warns us that it is not possible to separate our social, economic and political life from our religious life. We can’t rest content in celebrating “solemnities” and making “offerings” if we aren’t at the same time working to make this world look at least a little bit more what God intended it to be. The prophetic messages is that the people of God have as a religious obligation to make sure that every individual is treated with respect and dignity as children of God.
