The readings this summer provide a small tour through the Jewish prophets. They began with Amos and Hosea and this week turn to the greatest of the prophets, Isaiah. Amos and Hosea are outsiders — they are the ones holding up a protest sign outside the palace. Isaiah is the classic insider. He was born into nobility and had the king’s ear. He was able to influence government policy with his prophetic message. The LORD said to Isaiah: Go out to meet Ahaz … and say to him: Take care you remain tranquil and do not fear; let not your courage fail. Perhaps the lesson for us, no matter what — as political nobodies or in the room where it happens — we are called to promote greater justice.
