For the past few weeks we have been reading from Genesis — the story of the Patriarchs. For the next few weeks the readings will be taken from Exodus — the story of Moses leading the Hebrews out of slavery into the promised land. (After that a brief look at Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy — the summer of the Pentateuch.) Exodus begins with an all to familiar story, with the oppression of the immigrant out of fear of the “other.” “The Egyptians dreaded the children of Israel and reduced them to cruel slavery.” Can we at the distance of over three thousand years find a new way of operating? Can we see in the “other” someone who, like us, is made in the image and likeness of God?
