I went with Margaret the other day to the housing authority. She had received an eviction notice. We negotiated with the officials so that Margaret and the two grandchildren she was raising might be able to stay in her place. Reading the prophet Micah comes off not as an old, old story but as current events. “Woe to those who plan iniquity, when it lies within their power. They covet fields, and seize them; houses, and they take them; They cheat an owner of his house, a man of his inheritance.” The prophet warns against taking the human equation out of business dealings. Catholic social teaching likewise requires that we consider “the common good” to be a factor in our decision making.
