Moses is the figure more than any other who shaped the faith of Israel. His origin story is a bit shaky. (Don’t all superheroes have origin stories?) The name Moses is a perfectly good Egyptian name and doesn’t need the Hebrew explanation. What is secure is that he became the significant figure in leading a people out of slavery into freedom. He is dated somewhere in the middle of the thirteen century before Christ but that gap in time has not diminished his importance. Jesus insisted that he did not come to do away with the law that the Jewish people inherited from Moses but to bring it to fulfillment. Coming to an understanding of Moses, therefore, is a valuable practice for Christians.
