“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me … For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Jesus used an image that his hearers would be familiar with — that of a plow team. The yoke enables the two animals to combine their strength to complete the work at hand. Jesus wants us to make a swap, to trade in our yoke — the yoke of trying to stay in control and make things come out as we would like — for his. His yoke is light because we do not have to carry it by ourselves. Jesus teams up with us as we live each day, not doing our own will but by trusting in the will of God which with him is “easy and light.”
