What is obvious are that people are different. People don’t look alike, they don’t talk alike, they don’t think alike. What faith teaches us is that those differences pale to insignificance in light of what we all have in common — we are all children of God, made in God’s image and likeness. As Christians we have the responsibility, therefore, to celebrate who we are before God. St. Paul wrote: Christ Jesus is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh. For the Apostle the obvious difference was between Jews and Gentiles. For us in the US it might be citizens and immigrants or Black and white but whatever it is the differences have been bridged since Jesus is the elder brother to us all. Pope Francis citing this text said that we as the people of God don’t need walls but bridges.
