You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. This word of the prophet Micah has become the refrain of a popular hymn. The true power of the saying is only found in its context. Micah is chiding the people of Israel because their lifestyle belies the kind of behavior that God expects of the people. They tolerate injustice, income disparity, poverty and presume that worshiping God is the only requirement. The prophetic word, therefore, is a reminder that actions which promote justice, love and humility are the sign of authentic worship. A word that is true today as it was then.
