The lectionary continues to introduce us to the Old Testament prophets. Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah — God sent prophets to confront the coming crisis which would impact both the northern and southern kingdom. Like Isaiah he warned about coming destruction. And, like Amos in the north, he saw that the idolatry which lead people away from God was not only religious but also economic. They covet fields, and seize them; houses, and they take them; They cheat an owner of his house, a man of his inheritance. A society built on injustice was guilty of worshiping money instead of God. This message resonates in our time as well. Our system of capitalism has lost the Biblical perspective of the responsiblity of everyone for the common good. The prophets then and now tell us that unless everyone has the opportunity to share in the good things which God bestows on the earth there will be hell to pay (literally!)
