Moses is told to take off his shoes because he is walking on holy ground. Each of us has a place which became holy ground for us — the place where we connected with God. It might be some shrine or a mountain top or a forest glade. Each person meets God in their own way. It is important not to let the notion of “holy ground” assume too large a role in our spirituality. As important as sacred geography can become, it should not make the other ground on which we walk seem less holy. There isn’t any place where we can’t meet God if we have the eyes to see. Our whole lives we are moving from one piece of holy ground to another.
