There is a famous story that when Fr. Flanagan was gathering the so called “street urchins” into what would become Boys’ Town one boy came up who was carrying another piggy back. Fr. Flanagan asked if he wanted to put the other boy down. The young man answered, “Nah, he ain’t heavy. He’s my brother.” This became the motto of Boys’ Town and eventually a famous song. Jesus wants us to understand that there isn’t anyone out there who isn’t kin to us. “Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” We can’t dismiss anyone as “other” than us for we are all bound together as the family of God. Everyone deserves our care since we’re all connected.
