During the encounter at the burning bush Moses learns the sacred name. “I am who am,” (YHWH) says the Lord. This name is treated as so sacred by subsequent generations that no pious Jew would ever pronounce it. The power of this revelation perhaps obscures a second pronouncement from God. “The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever; this my title for all generations.” The sacred name can only be understood as part of the larger story of God’s (at this point 430 year old!) relationship with the Chosen People. Our own encounters with God are part of a larger story of grace as well.
