The LORD saved Israel on that day from the power of the Egyptians. There is an ancient Jewish tale that at the Exodus the angels were rejoicing when they noticed God weeping. “Why do you weep? Your children of Israel are saved.” “Yes,” God answered, “but my children of Egypt are dead.” The Bible says that the Chosen People were “peculiarly God’s own.” But every child born anywhere is a child of God. (Should we think of Israel as like the favorite child of a parent? “Mom always loved you best.”) Our circle of care should be similarly expansive — finding ways to be inclusive rather than exclusive. As Jesus said, “whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
