We continue our whirlwind tour through the Old Testament prophets by turning toward Jeremiah. Some have called him the first recognizable person because of the deep introspection which characterized his writing. His book begins with the call to be a prophet. He resists but God insists: To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak…. Then the LORD extended his hand and touched my mouth, saying, See, I place my words in your mouth! The call to become “missionary disciples” is our contemporary challenge. We, like Jeremiah, can feel inadequate to the task of bringing the good news of God into the world. The assurance we are given is that we only need to speak what God gives us.
