Like many of the Old Testament prophets Amos proclaims that the “word of the Lord” which came to him included warnings, threats, admonitions, judgment, punishment. He insists that God wants the people to change, to be converted, to live a more Godly life. But he can’t leave it there — besides the stick he also holds out a carrot. The “word of the Lord” includes a hope, a promise, restoration. This prophetic stance serves as a reminder to us that we are not stuck, that change is possible, that we can be renewed in God’s love and mercy. In faith we can be filled like new wineskins with God’s the intoxicating brew of grace.
