The Ten Commandments have seven “thou shalt NOTs” and three “thou shalt” — honor the Lord, honor the Lord’s Day, honor your parents. The emphasis seems to be on what we should not do more than on what we should do. Even the commandment to honor the Lord’s day — “Remember to keep holy the sabbath day” — has a NOT built into it — No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter. The Gospels report that many of the disagreements that Jesus had with the Pharisees centered on the Sabbath. Jesus thought that the Pharisees were too focused on what we shouldn’t do on the Sabbath than on the whole point of the Sabbath — honoring God in the cathedral of Sabbath time.
