Almost sixty years ago Bob Dylan wrote a scathing anti-war song, “With God on our side.” People justify war, destruction, even genocide by supposing that God is on their side, not that of the enemy. He ends the song by suggesting that Judas Iscariot probably thought he had God on his side. Jeremiah warns the people of Judah against that type of thinking. Put not your trust in the deceitful words: “This is the temple of the LORD! Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds … will I remain with you in this place.” The people could not hide behind the skirt of the temple in Jerusalem. Only just deeds and care for the needy put them on the side of God.
